Powerful historical drama that makes an impassioned case against slavery celebrates its 20th anniversary.

In 1839, the revolt of Mende tribal captives aboard a Spanish owned ship, the Amistad, causes a major furore in the United States when the ship is captured off the coast of Long Island. The courts must decide whether the Mende are slaves or legally free. The case becomes a cause celebre and goes all the way to the Supreme Court, leading to escalating tensions between the liberal American Northern states and the slave-owning Southern states that would culminate in the Civil War of 1861-1865. This landmark film was lauded the world over for its unflinching portrayal of the regressive practice of slavery and the efforts of the noble people who ultimately eradicated it.
