With David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Tom Felton
A terrific against-the-odds love story amidst the backdrop of political and racial tensions.
The film tells the true story of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1947 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments. A United Kingdom is an outstanding love story where the indigenous population aren’t happy with the idea of a white woman as their queen and the British government steadfast in holding on to their protectorate while being conscious of the backlash from race riven South Africa. Seretse is banned from his own country by the British government and is further betrayed when the ban is converted to a lifelong one. As he makes a determined bid to be amongst his own people with the help of the US government, his wife strives to get accepted by them.
